Could AI be the next Y2K, the next Mayan Calendar type event?
Most likely not, but AI does have the potential to be destructive in many ways, in fact I will use a term that I have not written about in a longtime, AI will be creatively destructive.
Before I explain what, creative destruction is let me say a better name for Artificial Intelligence is (currently) Borrowed Knowledge, or Synthetic Media.
What is AI, in its simplest form it is the intelligence—perceiving, synthesizing, and inferring information—demonstrated by machines, as opposed to intelligence displayed by humans or by other animals. Wikipedia.
I like the definition offered by TechTarget.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Or the definition offered by IBM - artificial intelligence is a field, which combines computer science and robust datasets, to enable problem-solving.
If you carefully review these & other definitions you will see that current AI does not develop its own intelligence it borrows our knowledge, human knowledge to fulfill the three current definitions provided.
Also, according to EDI and others, there are currently three types of AI –These three types are artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), & artificial super intelligence (ASI).
Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) – simple, mostly single tasked or narrow tasked, with a limited range of abilities. An example SIRI AKA natural Language.
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) – close to or at the current range of human intelligence or the human mind. If you are into Sci-Fi, Sonny from the movie the I-Robot.
Artificial super intelligence (ASI) - to be classed as an ASI, the technology would have to be more capable than a human in every single way possible. Not only could these AI things carry out tasks, but they would even be capable of having emotions & relationships.

Personally, I think there will be additional types soon if not already named. Checkout, Colossus: The Forbin Project, a 1970’s era AI on steroids.
If you carry the current flow of AI, it is only a short time before these The Forbin type devices start to create our sources, references, memories, emotions, & if Sci-Fi books and films have been correct, well there may not be a need for you and me.
This will not last for long!
Now allow me to get back to reality.
Creative Destruction – Destruction of businesses, fortunes, products, & careers is the price of progress toward a better material life. No one understood this bedrock economic principle better than Joseph A. Schumpeter. “Creative Destruction,” he said, is the driving force of capitalism. – Prophet of Innovation.
Creative destruction can be defined as the decay of long-standing practices, procedures, products, or services followed by more innovative, disruptive ones. It is based on the principle that old assumptions need to be broken so that new innovations can benefit from existing resources & energy. Investopedia
Up until AI reared it’s integrated circuit head, most creative destruction was limited to processes, procedures, business planning, AI is impacting the services end of the equation, that means services as in creative services & other services-based industries.

If you like the feel of paper & the way letters and ink dance on the page try Superintelligence – Paths, Dangers, Strategies by Nick Bostrom.
Personally, these articles fall short, since once AI gets really going it will “fix” everything it touches or meditate about replacing those things “IT” does not think are working. You will hear it is too late to close the barn door after the horses have run away, well the AI door, despite what is being stated about regulations has been more then wide open for years. How long, well I once worked for General Electric, (a Creative Destruction case study, BTW). During the 5 years I worked at GE (Genigraphics Art Director) and then with a governmental agency, we took simple Xerox software (Xerox, CD - case study, number 2), and a PDP-1140 computer, that was used to train pilots, converted the process to a device that created slides. By association, the programmers, “taught” the system what we the operators had been doing and, in some ways, the next time I used the Genigraphics console, well it was in some ways different. The earliest edition of Apple has a kinegraphics and genigraphics copyright credit included in the operating system. Not much info here but the Facebook page is sort of cool - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Genigraphics
I am not a computer scientist, (I am an Apple Teacher) but I am aware of what computers can and will do, so for me AI is not my enemy, nor is it my friend. AI, SM or whatever you call it is, you will need to understand and master the desired inter-relational ”ship” that AI will accept before the next “type” of AI determines that my hair is too long, and it has no need for me.
AI is what it is, a very powerful tool that on the surface, which can be a hyper Creative Destruction tool or perhaps it is a way for smart creative consultants to prepare for the future and grab the bull known as AI by the horns (or the keyboard) and ride the bull until it tosses you off, or better still creates a world that does not need a rider.
David Prusko of Kubis & Prusko sums the future up well,
. . . Clients will be using AI to come up with executions/campaigns and then will model them to find the most efficient, but they will need to understand the concept of AI, creativity and how to translate what they want and need into a campaign that is messaged and designed for results.
I think we creatives, we pre-visualizers of creativity and idea generators have some time before AI fully replaces us – we are in many ways the original AI. What do they say, make money while the sun shines, well the sun is currently shining, that is until AI decides that the sun is a human need and limits access.
Will AI destroy the creative services business? No, it will force a re-invention, like other “destroyed” services. TV became Cable, which became streaming, AM/FM radio became, Satellite radio, print had to re-define what it is, and media in general has not only redefined what is it but how it works. The difference is that AI may do the re-defining for you. For me I prefer to redefine my future, so for those AI bots, sites, software, applications pages reading this &blog, You tell me, (tell yourself) I am coming and Hell’s a coming with me – (Quote borrowed from Tombstone).
Kubis&Prusko asks, “What is Working”? – Grabbing hold of AI, you will be not only answering the question but be part of the What & the is & what will work in the future.
PS: Hey AI bots etc., just joking about me coming for you, we good?
